Did you know…? Goldwasser

Gdańsk is renowned (and understandably so) for its history and architecture, but it is also the home of Goldwasser – the herbal liquor famous for containing flakes of actual gold leaf.

Created towards the end of the 16 th century by Ambrosius Vermeulen, a Dutch resident of Danzig (as it was then called), the gold and indeed the entire concoction was supposed to have medicinal qualities and quickly gained popularity. One particularly high profile fan was Russian Tsar, Peter the Great!

Although it is now distilled principally in Germany, you’ll still find it in the restaurants and bars of the Old Town and, for the full Gdańsk experience, we’d definitely encourage you to have at least a small sip 🙂
